Weird high pitch whine on cold start up.......... help
In the early morning, I get a weird high pitch whine sound on startup while the car is sitting still warming up. After approximately 2 minutes, it goes away. It happens every morning. Kinda sounds like a lear jet noise and it's pretty loud. Seems to be getting worse. Doesn't happen at any other time when starting the car (ie during the daytime)........... only after it's been sitting all nite. Anyone have any thoughts before I hand my baby over to the man at Audi (who will rape my azz and plunge me with the sea salt) ????

Sounds like your secondary air injection pump might
be going bad. This pump essentially adds extra air to the engine right after cold start-up in order to keep emissions low. The pump runs for roughly 60 seconds or so right after cold start-up (like after letting the car sit overnight). Try this: next time you are ready to start the car from cold, open the hood first. Start the car and with your head in the engine comparment, listen for a high-pitched whining sound coming from roughly the area around the brake booster. If you hear that, and it goes away after 60 seconds or so, you've found the issue: secondary air injection pump.
Cost to have the pump (and a related valve) replaced at the dealer cost me about $650. Yoiu may not need both.

My car stinks on start up...... smells really rich as of lately.
So this may be the problem then. Any chance this is a DIY-er job or should it be taken to a mechanic???
Is this problem something that I should be hauling my azz into the shop ASAP or it's non-critical to the running of the car since it's only for start-up ?

well that would make sense then. It's not super critical but if only the pump is bad don't
let it linger too long or the valve could go too.
There was someone here who took his pump apart and repaired it himself....posted pics and everything. Seemed really straightforward if you're at all handy with the tools. IIRC that was within the last 6 months or so, do a search and you'll find it.

Try to locate the source or approx. area of the noise..
...being high pitched, it should be easy to zero in on.
I dunno if anyone mentioned, but the secondary air pump is found only on Tiptronic 2.7s (my 6-speed doesn't have one).
Good luck!
