When I press the left button on my dash (while driving) an orange "MPH" sign comes on.
If I exceed 5mph in speed, past the point when I pressed the button, the dash beeps with the orange "MPH" logo coming on again. I use it to help me monitor my speed on my weekend trips. You can set a new base speed by pressing the button again at the desired velocity.
I'm not sure if this applies to the new cars. Mine is the pre-facelift model. (1999)
Question: am I using this properly? Is that what it is used for? What other cool things can I do on my dash?

According to the manual: there are (2) speed warnings
One temporary; one permanent. The manual covers the setting of these features perfectly. The exact page number escapes me at the moment, but I have see and used it.

Oh yeah, two settings...here's how it works...<long>
according to the manual, Speed Warning 1 is set when the car is moving at the desired speed. You should see the circle with the 1 in the upper right. To cancel, press and hold for at least 1 second when the car is moving at least 3 MPH. If the wanring indicator has the slash, then it is cancelled.
Speed Warning 2 is "permanent" and is set when the car is turned off. So you can set a permanent one for 80 MPH so you don't get that wicked ticket, but don't want that LOUD warning tone every time you go over 65. To set, press the button briefly to get the mileage to display. Then press the button again for at least 2 seconds, you should then see the circle with the 2 lower right. Use the selector button on the end of the wiper stalk to select the speed you want up or down. To cancel, turn car off, press button to display the setting, then hold the reset button on the bottom of the wiper stalk.
Good for long trips if you don't pay attention to speed or don't have your cruise set.

Art, your sig pic kills me.......If I ever set my temp at 78, i would be a roasted chicken...
both of mine are at 71, all year around. the only change is switch to ECON when it gets cold.
our heater / ac systems are very smart, just find the temp you like and leave it.
It adjusts both heat / cold output and fan speed to best rech you desired cabin temp as efficiantly as possible. IE: no need to set 80 degrees to warm the car up quickly, then lower it back to your comfy zone....
