Default Battery tender question

Hi guys. Right now, our 2010 A6 Avant is our daily driver. My wife and I are fotunate enough to carpool about 95% of the time and we put about 12,000 miles per year on this car.

I'm thinking of relegating this car to less frequent use and relying one of our other vehicles for more daily driver type activities. The net effect would be that the Audi would likely stay in the garage except during winter weather and occassional use and likely see less than 5,000 miles/year going forward.

That use mirrors what I drove my Porsche 911 Carrera S before my son was born. At that time, it was critical that I used a battery maintainer on the Porsche as those things literally kill batteries if you're not driving them often.

My question for the forum is with all the electronics in the Audi, can I expect the same need for a battery tender? Any thoughts/experience would be greatly appreciated.

I like the battery tender routine, but how long is the car going to sit without being driven? How old is the battery?

I would think the car will be driven once a week, except during winter when it will be driven more frequently.

It is the original battery.

I can't imagine you'll have any issues with such frequent use.

Is there a history of problems with the car? A week really isn't a very long period of inactivity.

No problems. However, many modern cars which are electronic heavy (BMW I-Drive cars and all 997/987 and newer Porsche's) all chew through batteries if not being driven frequently.

I think I'm going to go ahead and use the tender. There's no downside other than the slight inconvenience of pluggging/unplugging and if it helps stave off an expensive battery replacement, that much more the better.

Thanks all.

I only do around 2,500 miles a year. When not in use I connect a battery charger to it and just leave it in the garage untill I want to drive again. That way my battery is always fully charged.
