Default Brake Light Warning ... but why?

Audi A6 2008 quattro

I got brake light warning for back passenger side. Bought replacement bulbs... open up the back light shell .... none of the bulbs are burnt! All the top 3 bulbs are on when I start the engine to test the brake lights. I step on brakes, the left side lights up (the side I didn't open) ...the right side that I open the 3 lights just stays on..I thought it would flash or light up when I press brakes. If all the bulbs are ok then what else can I check THe brake light warning still showing and still does not light up when I press brake.

Thanks!
C

You should scan the car to see what (if any) diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present to help you resolve the brake warning light.

Maybe wrong bulbs in sockets like a single filament bulb in a dual filament socket shorting 2 pins etc. Could find a bulb chart or compare bulbs with the working side. If a bulb fits in a hole doesn’t mean it’s correct 😉

Also, check for corrosion at the connector for the assembly. If there is high resistance in a connection then the bulb test will fall outside of a pre-determined range.

This is a common issue with the tail light assembly and is a result of connectors failing in the unit. It is not serviceable and you will need to buy a replacement assembly. Fortunately, it comes with new bulbs if I remember correctly but it's been awhile since I replaced mine
