MMI replacement and AUX input addition

MMI replacement and AUX input addition
Hi, I want to add an AUX input to my 2006 A6 3.2 Quattro Sedan (pre-facelift). I read around that in order to do that I would either have to get a Dension system or an aftermarket head unit. I have no idea if I gave 2G MMI or not.
My big problem here is that my MMI system doesn't work, and needs replacing. Basically, when I turn the car on, the audio plays for 5-10 seconds, and I get the warning on every startup. After 10 seconds pass, all the lights on the selector flash red and the entire system shuts down, the screen along with it. No matter what I tried, nothing works. I looked into this issue and i guess I have to replace the MMI system.
Now my main question is is it do I have to replace the MMI to have access to the car's audio, or can I just rip out the CD changer and replace it with an aftermarket head unit and use that for my audio?
Either way, i'm not going to use CD's and I use navigation and everything else from my phone. So an AUX input and bluetooth are extremely necessary.
Is it worth paying for a new MMI system or can I just replace the whole thing with a new head unit, and if the aftermarket unit is the way to go, which one should I buy so I can have an AUX input in the front?

Then you can determine what you need to do next, if you are attempting to perform A2DP (BT Audio/Music streaming), then you will need either an AMI or other (i.e. Dension 500) installed to permit this.
If you don't have a usb outlet in your vehicle (in your glove box), then you will need an update of some kind to enable you to do what you are seeking. There's a LOT of threads on this and try the search or you could just trash your MMI setup and go into the 21st century with something like this:

I've been using this for the last 5 years and its been great. Its the VNS Media aux adapter. Just jumpers into your optical line and power from the CD changer in the glove box.
It shows up as CD #7 in your MMI
They seem to be out of stock, but you may want to ping them.

See, the problem is that my MMI system doesn't work.
What I wanted to know is whether or not I should scrap the old MMI that doesn't work and replace it with an aftermarket one

Step 1 - get a VCDS log and determine what's causing the reboot

Other than what raj99 showed, I don't know of any on the market solution to replace the MMI screen and functionality. Especially if you have MMI 2G, that is harder as I think most solutions focus on MMI 3G compatability.
Your MMI also handles more than just audio as you know, so removing it completely for a simple audio adapter would be an incomplete solution.
Your best bet would be to diagnose what the actual issue is and get the current MMI repaired or replaced with a similar unit from a used parts place.

It could be that your BT module is fried, which can impact the MMI functionality.

I spoke to a specialist, and he said that if one part goes down the entire system shuts down to avoid damage, if this is true and the BT module in in fact fried, should I replace it with an original module from the same year as the old one or does replacing it with a newer version change anything?
