OK, I'm on my way home listening to a CD on the way home and all of a sudden, no sound but the track is ticking away. I switch to radio - nothing. Hit NAV and put in a destination I know I'm making a wrong turn - nothing. Of course about 15 minutes later, wham it blasts back on the CD -of course I turned the volume up earlier when it died. What button could I have pushed on the steering wheel to kill sound in the first place? I've read the user manual but must have missed something. 06 A6 Avant

Good news is that its a software issue. I recently went through this with our new A6 Avant. Sound would cut out except for an odd repetitive click. There is a 2 CD set with part number 4F0998961. There are a bunch of threads about how to apply the update. Takes about 2 hours to do the upgrade. Here is the TSB related to the issue

This TSB covers an earlier version of the software, but the newest version is the only one needed.

Interesting because the used car dealer I recently bought it from just replaced the amp and had Audi set it up. I've looked at the MMI update threads but none of the sample SW versions seem to match mine in format.
