I also got a A8 as a loaner a couple of times...
I love them...
This was a 4.0 TDI, really smooth car!
I love this color combo to..
The only downside.. the price, 220k US Dollar (160k euro), that's exactly twice what I paid for my A6..

Gas mileage
You don't drive an A8 or a loaded A6 and worry about gas mileage.
Depreciation makes the gas mileage cost differential insignificant.
I laugh when a owner of an Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc. brings up gas costs.
Gas is cheap compared to owning a luxury auto mobile.
My wife drives an R500 (could not convince her to let me buy a Q7) and someone asked me about the gas mileage and I said it does not.

Gas mileage is not entirely about price. To be honest, I am extremely excited about getting better gas mileage. First and foremost because I won't need to fill up ever 3 days. Secondly I would rather be putting those extra gas $ saved into development of new products, or maintaining the car in a better way, rather than handing them over to the gas company.
Trust me, I am the last one to care about emissions and cars, but honestly being a investor in new technology I really appreciate the fact that I can NOT spend so much on gas and instead spend it on items that improve our life and hopefully make it better. If I had poor mileage like say 8 mpg, I would have to spend my money filling up oil companies coffers!

$ is $
I agree, I don't think even Bills Gates or Warren Buffett would discount the value of a dollor, or even a cent. They all add up to something, and sometimes something very big.
I wouldn't overlook the value of gas milage too quickly.
If my car could get 30 to 40 mpg I would save about $150/ month, that's almost $10,000 for a 5 year period. For a $50-60,000 car, that's a sizable percentage. (I think the dealer with appreciate that 20% mark-up.)
One can do whatever one wants with the money one works hard to make, but I can find a lot more useful things to do with my money than spend it on gas.
Just because it's a "luxury" car, shouldn't make it a money waster.
