Sound Amplifier Basic - Swapping
I've managed to isolate the lack of sound from my 2006 A6 C6 vehicle to the Sound Amplifier Basic module PN# 4F0 910 223B. I used the VCDS scanning feature to discover that many of my modules (Mulitmedia, Nav, gateway, telephone, XM, Radio) were malfunctioning, however the AMP module was showing it was not reachable.
Additionally, I found the optical fiber loop tool PN# 4E0 973 802 useful. It allowed me bypass modules to find the offending module while used in conjuction with the VCDS Optical Bus Diagnostic. For example, I pulled the optical fiber connector from the Sound Amplifier Basic module and connected the optical fiber loop tool in its place. Now, when I run the optical bus diagnostic all modules pass except the Amplifier.
My initial symptoms:
Experienced several popping noises from the speakers with the limited MMI operation that included the screen blanking out and reappering with the logo screen along with limited functionality of all modules. This spuractic activity progressed to eventually no sound showing a constant mute showing on the MMI screen with non-repeatable and limit MMI fuctionality.
Dealerships want $1,069 for a new amplifier, high priced but I expected this from the dealership. So I looked into a 3rd party repair shops but their details and capabilities seemed vague and uncertain. So I managed to locate a unit on Ebay and this is my strategy for going forward. My next step is to code and avoid component protection problems.
I have adapted and coded my Nav unit in the past as well as coded my key vob to open all windows. Meaning I'm somewhat familiar with the VDCS. But I do not consider myself an expert and I want add this "used" amplifier from another vechile and avoid component protection problems.
I recently needed to get a new amp because mine was flooded by a leaky washer fluid hose. Dealer charged me $125 to remove component protection, so it's not terribly expensive.

Well that was my concern. But I have another thought. Is there a way to see if the replace unit is operational without turning the engine on? Meaning can I see if the unit plays well using the VCDS optical bus diagnostic? I trying to remove the uncertainity associated with the replacement part prior to having to go to the dealer.
Well. I followed up with the dealer in Cincinnati and they performed the necessary programming & coding. They charged $112 which was indeed reasonable and performed within an 90 minutes. Pics of Sound Amplifier Basic module that was replaced. Thanks for your help!
