This should have been our first suggestion. I feel so dumb! Clean thar bolt, make sure you torque it to 9 Nm, drive again and report back.

so update -unscrewed valve cover - check plugs no fresh oil in there - good sign. lifted VC up enough to feel the gasket underneath and one part felt a little not set in as far as the rest. I was afraid to lift VC all the way off as last time I broke my breather hose. While the new breather hose is still flexible, trying to unplug it from the VC was not working. I used my fingers to rest the gasket a little further then set it back down, torqued per specs and then took it for 15 minute ride, slow at first then @ 5 minutes @ highway speed once temps were up to normal. Got home and the bolt did not have fresh oil on it. I was not able to dry/clean it well when doing repair so there was some residual but fingers crossed it looks ok. If I'm wrong and I have hairline crack, good news is that a used VC is only $25. Even new is like $150 - 190 USD if I decided to go that route. Appreciate the advice.

Hopefully it will be good this time. Next time you want to check the gasket, without disconnecting the breather hose, flip the valve cover as shown at 32:43 time of this video:

Thanks for the video - that's what I tried the first time and it was so old/brittle it did not twist and cracked instead. I hope the new one would be more flexible if I need to try this again.

They’re are no “corners” on the valve cover gaskets, or the cam covers.

I used a harbor freight plastic pry tool to pop the valve cover bolts out. Some came out easier than others, but they all came out pretty easily without incident.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I think it’s better than making a new one.

Kelisko, or anyone else, do we have a part # or alternate for replacement valve cover bolts? I have 3 heads stripped that I had to EZ out. - need to replace 3 (would almost prefer to change all if I can find affordable replacement hardware).

EDIT: Found them.
06B103831J
Priced $5.94 - $6.99 /ea on ECS tuning

EDIT 2: For removal and install I suggest pressing them. You can certainly try pulling them, if they're worn or old enough they might come out little to no force, but for the tougher ones, just use large channel locks and a deepwell socket.
