My dealer races Audi's so the question on why the A6 needed forged wheels was easily answered, strength. They also carried
a full line of after-market MHT Forged. Because the OEM was staying on with the winter performance tires for 5 months, I needed a second set of 7 month summer tires, so I splurged and got the MHT Fuego wheels, they almost look like wire but are extremely strong. I plan on keeping the car hence my justification for the splurge. I might also add I run on very rough winter roads and have never had a tire, wheel or bearing problem-that to me says allot for the OEM wheels.

I ordered up the bearings a little over a week ago from genuineaudiparts.com MSRP for them was $215 got them for $154 each. Had them swapped out at a friends small indy shop for $200. Car is back to normal again
As far as rims go, I agree with everyone on the forum 100% forged rims and significantly stronger than cast rims. With that said as far as in my case of wheel bearings failing at 60k, cast wheels didnt play much of a role they were installed on the car for a max of 3 months. They perhaps had a small affect on the wheel bearings failing pre-maturely but a small minor one. The car is a 5.5 years old and has been driven over the crappy NYC streets for the past 5.5 years. That is the culprit. The OEM rims have had bubbled tires countless times while my mother owned the car the first four years. I have ordered tires from tire rack (OEM ContiPros) about 5-6 times the first 4 years. She did not take the car off-roading to develop bubbles in the sidewalls but NYC fails to fill up potholes and repair road imperfections in timely manor. Those of you who also live in NYC can back me up on this one. To make the forum members who insist the rims are the culprit if it makes you happy the rims did it! You win, lol.
I am looking into OEM cast rims to replace my VMR 710's, and have seen Bentley Continental GT rims on an A6 before. As silly as this sounds, they actually look great on a stock A6. Here is a photo of the particular rim i have seen. They are 5x112 and ET41 rim size is 19x9.

At 38.5k miles, 4.5 years (2006 Avant) both front wheel bearings required replacement. As the car is out of warranty the service manager at the dealer "paid" for half the total bill (they are really good people) - still $420 out of pocket expense. It seems that AoA is aware of the problem, however they do not pay for replacement. Arggh!
It seems that if both fail at such low mileage this is an indication of a bad design, or defective parts. Am I missing something?
If you are close to the end of the warranty and hear any type of humming noise - have them checked and replaced!
