VAG-COM only works on Windows, I have done a couple with my laptop but I always get a bit nervous as well. The best thing to do is make a backup of the current settings and save them to your computer that way you can reload if you mess it up.
I was thinking about loading Parallels on my MBP Retina to see if I could get it running under that. In all respects it should work, but I have not had the time.
