Default UPDATE...

I went down to the shop, saw the car on a lift.

1) tie rod ends ARE loose
2) one of the front CV boots is torn and it has been leaking grease...

BUT I told them I don't want them touching the car and I want it back. On the lift they pointed at the back of the block and of course there was some oil there. They said it was from the head gasket and that this car has no rear cam seals. At that point I asked for the keys and I took my car back.

I just drove the car back to the office.

So I think this is what's wrong.

1) Bone-headed me topped of the coolant with dex-cool at one point, and that's what's made the coolant ugly. I need to flush it.
2) oil leaks are the standard culprits, valve covers and rear cam seals. It also explains why I need to add a quart ever few weeks.
3) The stuff I saw above; tie rod ends and boot.

Maybe a Saturday with PaulW (if he's willing) wouldn't be a bad idea, and I can do the timing belt and oil cooler, too, just for good measure.

Thanks all for the pointers and ideas.

Default I would change the cam cover gaskets

How many miles on your car since the last timing belt change?

Once I get a house with a garage, maybe you can come up for a TB change....I will have all my tools too!!!!

And I can do Stuart's car too! Should be by Mid summer if a house comes up that I want to buy.

Default Sounds like a plan...

Until then I'll flush the coolant and replace the rear cam seals... and do an oil change, too.

Default Re: Are you sure it's the head gaskets?

I'm brand new to this forum, but not to Audi's. Started with a 5000, then a 5000 tq, then a V8, now a 1999 A8. You guys do a great job sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm and I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum.
When I bought my 99 last month, it had all the service records and a clean bill of health from the dealer. Unfortunately, it leaked oil like a sieve. Long story short, the culprit turned out to be 3 clogged breather hoses and related hardware. The clogs were creating excessive crankcase pressure and blowing oil through every gasket on the engine. Everything has been replaced(including timing belt, water pump, etc. etc.) and the car is absolutely incredible. Total $$, including a transmission flush, were $2750.

Default These were probably the hoses you refer to

Congrats on the car...like most of us, you have a long history of Audi's....mine include a 87 5KSQ, then a 91 200q now a 97 A8.

You're on the money.

Default The bently manual and the ross-tech software

The manual is $70 on CD rom when you buy the software....which is about $225 with a cable. The best $300 you've ever spent....the car tells you what is wrong with it!

http://www.ross-tech.com</a

I guess now I'll have to break down and buy a laptop!
Thanks for the feedback.
