Default 18 vs. 19 inch tires

I am close to purchasing an '04 A8L. I live in snow country. I am wondering if I should get the stock 18's or get the 19's and change tires or wheels and tires both in the winter. I am not able to test drive both stock 18's and 19's so I wonder how much performance difference on dry pavement their really is. Any opinions? Thanks

Default Get 19's and buy a seperate set of dedicated 18" wheels and tires

You'd be very happy you did, there is a lot of performance difference between summer tires and all season tires that would come on the 18" wheels.

Default I thought the stock are 17s?

18s and 19s are both options from the AoA site...

Default IMHO, choose the WHEEL that you like.

The stock wheel is 17" and looks emaciated in the wheel well. The 18" tire is of the all-season variety which may or may not get you through. The 19" is a performance tire and my bet is that it wont do well at all in the snow country. Where is that country BTW? Good luck!

Default I am in Ohio and went with the 18s...

... partially because we're going into winter and I wanted to avoid performance tires and partially because I didn't want to have to order a car from scratch with 19s (one with 18s was already in route to the dealership). That said, I am sure that this coming spring, I'll get the bug for the 19s.

One plus with the 04 A8L though: both the 18s and 19s are great looking wheels.

If you get much snow at all, one thing is certain, I would think... performance tires are not going to be a winter solution for you.

the 19's in my opinion are simply an appearance preference. the only snow tire that fits I have found is $274 each. if you don't care about appearance difference, I would go with the stock 17 inch which should get you around just fine all year.

I should have also stated, "Mr. Plum" will remain in the house under controlled heat and humidity if it snows or is icy around here. . . its the idiots out there I am concerned about.

I'm with Paul. I was fortunate to test drive cars with both the 19's (P-Zero Rosso) and 18's (Conti all weather) There's a significant performance difference between the 19's and 18's, and since neither work well in real snow, I was able to buy a set of 18's from a fellow Audiworlder for a set of Blizzaks.

Default I chose the 18's

In Pennsylvania, I need the M & S tires and felt the 18'were good enough. I don't have enough room for a snow blower in my garage let alone 4 summer tires.
