Default 1998 A8 with transmission problems. Help!

Hi there,

I need your guys help with my Audi A8. It seems that my tranny has just gone south with only 75kmiles on it! I was hoping against hope that replacing the transmission computer would fix the problem. You guessed it; it didn't. The car sometimes produces a loud "BOOM" at around 65mph. At low speeds it also slips and seems prety random. The dashboard gear indicator shows sometimes all gears being engaged, and other times none of the gears. I could somewhat control it when I dropped it off at the mechanic by placing it in steptronic mode and keeping it in a higher gear.
I am now shopping for a good remanufactured tranny and I need your help with any recommendations. car-part.com lists a couple for $2500.00. I wanted to keep it below $2k (parts and labor). Any suggestions please? Do you know of any reputable shop where I can get a good reman one?

Default Just about the same thing happened to my business partner's 98 last week

He kept telling me it was scary, then it was shifting very hard down into first and second....

About 5 months ago he started getting the torque converter dropout and thump.

Last Sunday night he was driving in bumper to bumper traffic on I-84 towards Waterbury going up that long hill and it let loose.

He said it dropped ATF fluid also, which I thought was very odd.

I recommended he bring it to the place that Marco had his done in La Grange, NY to have his tranny rebuilt. About a 2 week turn around, he'll get the quote once it's torn down.

I think that's going to be your cheapest option versus buying a remanufactured unit.

Where are you located?

I'm located in Raleigh, NC. I am surprised this happened with only 75kmiles on the car!

Default Raleigh

I'm in Raleigh also. Where did he end up having the transmission work done? Just in case I end up needing a rebuild eventually too...

Default It's been said ...

... that if one solenoid in the transmission goes bad, when the transmission changes to limp-home mode, there is no safety check for engine RPM. If RPM is inappropriate, it shatters the stamped sheetmetal clutch A as it changes to limp-home.

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid and filter?

Default The transmission breather hose has a stupid check valve on the end.

It if get stuck when the tranny is cold, the pressure from the next warm up will force the fluid trough the tranny's back seal between the tranny and the center differential. It will pour out on the driver's side like crazy.

You've certainly become an expert on our tranny's quirks.

Default Re: Raleigh

Today I took the car to Cottman on New Hope Road and they said I have internal damage. They will charge me $650 to take it off and open it up before they tell me what it costs to fix it. He was talking about a possibility of $10k to fix. I figure I might as well get a good reconditioned one. I found some place a reconditioned tranny for $2500 + $100 shipping guaranteed for 2 years and I can't remember where I wrote it down! Does anyone know of a good place to get a good reman tranny?

Default $10K to fix???? Skip!!!!

You can bring it to a dealer, they get a remanufactured unit from Germany straight from ZF for less. About 1-2K less.

A repair shop should be able to do it for $3500 max. Some have done it for less than $2K, but not many.

Bring it somewhere else. A place that specializes in Jaguar's is good, they have the same ZF tranny or a place that specializes in BMW, they also have the same tranny in the 7 series.

Default I would say so

I was wondering how tranny fluid could come out, and from my understanding there was a small puddle, nothing huge.

So you are most likely right, that darn overflow, it must of overheated like a son of a bitch! He said it really stank!

Hope all is well Gabor!!!
