Default 2001 S6 really S8, I have this car.

I am new here. What I have is a 2001 S6 Quatro that evidently was reconfigured by Audi mid season with the 4.2 V8 big horsepower (375 of them), flared wheel wells, moon roof, beefed p suspension and most every cool option. Maybe this is a common legend but I have the car with the S6 marker on the back and it is not an S6. I got the car from a collector who told me how rare this vehicle is. I figure I could get some straight information here. Does anyone know anything about this car? Thanks

I have been looking at pictures on line and it looks just like the S8 models from 2001 to 2003. If there is a way to post pictures here I will try.

99-03 S6's all had 40V V8's like all 01-03 A8's and S8's....NO special edition for the states. In fact all S6's in the states (99-03) were wagons (Avant) only.

Post your VIN and I'll tell exactly what you have...people mess with badges all the time, but the VIN will tell the truth.
You can even leave out the last 6 digits, which are just the production #.

Well, either you copied it down wrong, it's stolen and altered ....or it's a Chinese counterfeit

It doesn't follow the normal rules of a VIN...look at this:

Default Interesting

Is it possible that for the 'rest of the world' the standard created by the good old USA was not adhered to? Or, I just might have the first Chinese Audi S8, which I just had serviced by the dealership and they charged me an arm and a leg for some routine service, which was code for 'stealership'

Dude, you own a A6 with the 4.2 litre V8 motor which also includes flared wheel openings.... http://bemidji.craigslist.org/cto/2763144981.html If I am not mistaken that is your car is it not? I could be wrong but going by both your description and the description in the CL ad it would seem you are one and the same. No offense or anything but what you own is far from a A8/S8. The A8 was the first production car to use an all aluminium space frame so do the magnet test to see if it is actually steel (A6) or non-ferrous (A8/S8). I don't know what you were told when you bought that car but it is a standard A6 with a standard 4.2 litre V8 installed. Use Google and search for images of the A8/S8 and it will take you mere seconds to see that it is not a D2 A8/S8.

"ZZZ" is usually what appears on the engine bay tag, no? It will come up as invalid because it's only a partial VIN (they fill the rest in for the "official" VIN when the car is done). You need the VIN from the tag on the dash/A-pillar (whichever it is on these cars).

Looks like a regular C5 S6. It could even be a regular C5 A6 4,2 quattro.
