97 A8 no heat
#31
I have a 99 A8, this post was very helpful as the heat was not working. To access to aux pump, we took the fan out for the hvac system and cut the plastic housing, removed the aux pump and bypassed it with parts from home depot lol but now the heat works. I like to do things the right way but its a 99 audi with 170kmi - extra car, and I wasn't about to take apart the dash or pay someone else to. Just wanted to share in case someone else is in the same position.

i was going to go the bypass route as well, but found a great deal for a used pump for $100 shipped. the rest function even works with it.
although it is a bit too late, if you had just removed the brake booster, then the pump, you would've had all the room you needed to bypass the pump. no hacking of the hvac housing would've been needed.

We got the oil cooler out and did the gaskets, that was not it. Thought it could possibly be the oil pan so we did that gasket as well but it ended up being the head gaskets, oil leaking down and coming out from a little hole near the lower left timing belt sprocket, which then covered everything.
It seemed like there had been work done on heads before, and the person I bought it from mentioned the owner before him did the head gaskets, not sure if they re-used the old bolts which I understand stretch and are 1 use only, but the heads are apart right now and should be done later in the week, I will post an update once all this shtuff is back together

I took a look at my car with the same problem and it seemed like someone has already done a bypass on that pump because the two solenoids are gone and replaced with a single rectangular-looking solenoid. I can't seem to see the pump because I was just peeking in after removing the plastic cover. both 2 hoses to/from engine on that pump is hot, and inlet/outlet on the coolant tank is hot as well....any guess?
Very cool...have never seen one disassembled before. A past mix of G-12 with the wrong coolant would be my guess too. What a great example to show others.
I've seen this sludge in a coolant reservoir, before a full chemical flush (absolutely necessary after a mistake like that)...the car (VW) later developed leaks at plastic heater hose fittings, anyway. That sludge is not only clogging, but corrosive to some plastics...didn't seem to effect rubber hoses and seals, though.
I wanna hear if you get it working. I would think that cleaned up and sealed properly, you have a good chance.
Thanks for the photos and progress report.

It's not a white 99 A8 from NY w key marks on the trunk is it? we put a switch inside the car on the left side of the radio and the air was either hot or cold. the switch controlled a power valve where the "monster" used to be, it was a brass square. I didn't like this solution but other options were in the thousands. it could just be a simple valve

what's the chances! it is indeed that car lol. where's the switch you were talking about? the car is blowing warm on left and cold on right at the moment.
