'98 A8 That cranks but won't start.
Last week stopped at the dry cleaners on the way to work and went to leave and my '98 A8 wouldn't start. Cranked fine but just wouldn't start. Tried starting it for about 5 minutes and all the sudden it starts and runs fine for a week.
Then last night it wouldn't start last night after making a stop at the drug store. It cranked fine but wouldn't stay running. Sometimes it sputtered then immediately stalled. A couple of times it started but missed badly then stalled as soon as any gas was applied. Had my daughter try to start it so I could listen for any noise from my fuel tank inlet but couldn't hear any noise from the pump. I tried to get it to start over a 40 minute period then gave up and had it towed to repair shop.
Checked with VAG COM and didn't find any codes so I am suspecting a fuel pump is going bad especially since it has 196,000 miles on it. Any other ideas on what may be causing my problem?

i had/have this exact same prob.
The first time it left me stranded it was the CRANK POSITION SENSOR on the driver side behind cylinder 8 against the firewall...my CPS cable was hanging loose, frayed and exposed, grounding out on the tranny or engine (so im told). I replaced that sensor ($150 btw) and she ran fine for 2 weeks...then it did it again and after 1 restart and a couple miles it died for good. I agree that it could be the fuel pump and/or and ECU/TCU problem. My mechanic is looking at the car as we speak so i will post back when i figure it out. How expensive is a Fuel Pump anyway?

Resolution for no-start is "Fuel Pump"
Repair shop called last night and said it was the fuel pump that failed. Part is $569 dollars and about 2.5 hours to install. Awfully expensive but with 196,000 miles on it I guess I can't complain.
On a side note a guy I work with just found out that his fuel pump on his Ford truck with 30,000 miles on it needed replaced and it was going to cost him over $600. That makes me feel a little better when I think of all the gallons of fuel my pump had to pump before it failed.
