While talking to an Audi parts person recently, I learned that the 97 A8 used three different versions of the 01L transmission. My 97, built in June 97 uses the DTE. The CD Bentley manual provides this scenario:
Build 7-96 thru 11-96 uses code DPZ
Build 11-96 thru 2-97 uses code DSM
Build 3-97 thru ? uses code DTE
Build 5-99 on uses code EDG
The rear differentials change also. There can be some overlap at the transmission change points. If I interpret this correctly, the same transmission is used from the late 97s thru late 99s (without Tip on the 97s). The pan on the DTE is different than the previous versions. It would be interesting to determine if one code fails more than another. Any comments?

...when I was searching for a transmission the other day. I know there are several people on this board and the A8 list (audifans.com) that have had transmissions fail. I was thinking of starting a database (you can do that right on the yahoo group) with the correct fields and people could add (or I will) their data. Especially those that failed. Would be very interesting.

I hope that few have this problem, but if they do, it would be interesting to see the results. Thanks for your offer to set up the database. I enjoy reading your posts. I also read audifans archives regularly.
