Default Another thought on the hunting /thumping issue

There will be a temp sensor in the trans and if that was not givin g the correct signal this could well cause the torque converter some confusion as happens with most new cars when cold.
Honda's on this side of the world often lose 2nd gear alltogether just because of incorrect temp signal.
This presumably could be checked via Vag-com.

Default See my post to Paul W just above

The temp sensor is integrated into the internal wiring harness for the tranny valve body and the input sensor, so you get that and maybe the Ginsu knives all for $99 from the ZF distributor. Or, you can go to your friendly Audi dealer and pay a bit over $200 for the same part.

Default sounds like a good way to go.for a couple of hundred it will save

pulling it apart again although I see the attraction in isolating the problem once and for all.
