Default Audi A8 2000 Camshaft sensor

Hi fellas. In need of some help. A code popped up, P1522, and had some weird issues when starting the vehicle, would make a loud noise, but when I turn it off it would start normally. My mechanic told me it's most likely a camshaft sensor that went bad. Now, I kinda wanna replace it myself, so a few questions. Does that sound like a sensor issue? If so, are there two or one? And what's the location? Any help is much appreciated.

Sounds like a broken guide on the cam chain tensioner/adjuster.
Bad sensors don't make noises.

You did not provide a lot of info, please describe the loud noise on a cold start. Sensors do not usually make noise, its probably a bad cam chain adjuster:
17930/P1522 - Ross-Tech Wiki

If the car is in good shape it might be worth repairing it yourself. Having a shop do it is probably over $2000. I just did the pads on these on my 2001 at 190K miles and the repair was arguably not a good investment of my time.
Bank 2 is the LH bank, the one with the oil fill on a 4.2. It's not hard to take the cam cover off and see what that pad and tensioner looks like.
If the car is not worth a a big investment and it's the top cam chain pad on that side you might be able to pop a new pad on and maybe be OK for a while.

No noise on a cold start this morning. When it happened yesterday, it was midday, after a few hours of sitting, only on the first turn. Then I'd shut it off and try again but it would be back to normal. Same thing both times. Also noticed a small oil leak, between the middle and the tire, further back.
