Bike Rack, anyone have a Recommendation for a bike rack for on A8 or A6

I bought an SUV...
and put a nice Thule rack on top. No need to scratch up the paint and get dirt on my A8. Trust me, no matter how careful you are, you will scratch/dent your hood if you use a bike rack often. Plus, who wants to get their nice leather seats mucked up after a nice muddy ride? I guess it`s all a matter of priorities; I have a 95 wrangler, a 95 4Runner, and a 97 A8 (no major mechanical problems with any of them). All three together cost less than half of a new A8.

Re: Have you tried taking both wheels off?
I can get two road bikes and (at a squeeze) all four wheels and a soft bag into the boot of my A8.
I hate driving with external racks. I always imagine that the bikes will catch on something, and get torn off, along with the rack and most of the boot lid.

Here's my solution, similar to GlenC's . . .
It's a 2x4 with a couple of Yakima brackets.
Total cost: $50, including a chain and combination lock (assuming you have a truck, of course). Plus, there's room for two more bikes.

I've got Thule racks that I use with a ski carrier for extra luggage on 4-up vacation trips.

It works great.
I bought from one of these guys, I think, don't remember which one (the bookmarks I had in a "racks" folder from when I was shopping).

One of them was right next door to the Thule U.S. warehouse; very few places are going to have the A8 "foot" kits in stock.

I bought the factory accessory base load bars, because
they fit to the car great, custom for the A8. Then bought Audi ski rack and also used my Thuele ski rack (after buying some VW bolts that fit the Thuele to the Audi base bar, bought from a rack outfitter, probably can get from VW/Audi). To attach stuff to the Audi base bars, you need bolts welded to a square piece that slides into the base bar....pretty easy to install different racks this way.I plan to buy the Audi Baracuda bike racks. They look pretty slick. The prices from Audi are comparable to Thuele and Yakima. I like the custom fit of the Audi base load bars.
