checking voltage regulator
Connect the meter, read battery voltage (Should be around 12.7 V). Then start the engine, and read the voltage with alternator output (should be about 13.5-14 V)
If you want to perform a load check, with the engngine still running, turn on lights and heater fan (hit the defrost button) The voltage should remain higher than battery voltage (12.7V)
Other than than that, a visual check of the regulator carbon brush length is the only way to test the device without extensive electronics know-how.
