Default chrome trim

I know I have seen mention of this before. Is there a source for the "chrome" trim on the
A8 ? Mine looks really bad around the back bumper and a couple of the windows. I assume this is just plated plastic. Has anyone been successful in polishing this in some way ?
Why couldn't they just use SS or aluminum !

Default I've got the same problem.

Dig around in my picture poster, and you'll see some pics of this. The chrome/bright trim around the windows is "cloudy". I don't think it's plastic. Metal polish doesn't do anything. I think it's a problem with clearcoat on the trim. I'm going to try really polishing a section with a detail vibrating sander with a foam pad and 3M IHG or better, and see what happens. I may end up painting it, or replacing.

If you find a solution, let me know.

Default Its solid aluminum alloy and Its not coated.

I had the fronts replaced at a body shop and they gave me the old ones. To my surprise they weren't plastic, Nor chromed, nor where they clear coated. I was able to take a dremel to them and polish some of the marks off. No sign of a clearcoat. BTW the polishing was very slow going with red rouge and that is with these things off the car!! I doubt its possible to polish them while they're on the car.

Those things are 150 bucks each. The right side being a bit more expensive then the left.

I have the same cloudiness and haven't found a chemical polish that takes it off. Tried many things on those two spares.

The Eagle One Mag/Aluminium wheel polish works wonders on the cloudy trims

Default nope I'll try that and the Eagle 1 mag and alum wheel polish and report back

I didn't buy the eagle one cause of the chemicals and it said bluntly not for use on bare aluminum... But if controlled it could be just the thing as silver A8L has said.
I'll post some before and after pictures.

Default Eagle One Billet Aluminum Polish also works well.

I use this on the mirrors, trim, and HRE's.

Default good advice guys....

at least I know it's not plastic so I assume something can be done with it. I have a piece that's pretty scratched up and one that has the yellowing problem. I'll experiment as well (nothing too loose) and report back.
