Default Could it be the starter motor

I gotta a presisting problem with my audi A8 4.2 97 model where it will takes three, four or even five times to start it if it was not a cold start.
There would be a sound as if something was getting loose and spins freely downthere.
If it was the starter motor windings then it is a very big job just to remove the motor.
Is this sort of problem a common one with this model?

Default Sounds like the mechanism that engages the starter pinion

to the flywheel, aka the "bendix" is not working. If it were the windings the starter motor would not work at all.

Which mechanism do you mean? The outer belt?
