Diagnostic tool question

Diagnostic tool question
Is there one computer diagnostic unit that handles different types of cars? I thought about getting the VAG-COM for my 97A8 and a ROVACOM-LITE for my 96 Range Rover, but I was wondering if there was something that could work on both vehicles. The price would obviously have to justify not buying the two seperate units. I think the VAGCOM is $300 and the ROVACOM is $400. Anybody know of such a thing? Thanks.

No generic tool as comprehensive as VAG-COM, but ...
I also have the CarChipE/X. This $180 device can report and clear the basic DTC's on any car with an OBD-II port (most '96 and newer vehicles), but I bought it for the data logging features. See New Toy for the S8.

The following log of speed vs time from a session at an Audi event at Grattan is another example of it's capabilities.

The VAG-Com is worth every penny......
The VAG-Com I bought for our Audi has paid back volumes, used in conjuction with the Bentley Manual you can fix virtually any problem. I just wish those guys at Ross-Tech would write software like that for Porsche.

Re: Diagnostic tool question
Just got off the Ross-Tech web site, and it looks as if the VAG-COM is not compatible with the Range Rover. The diagnostic tool for the Range Rover(Rovacom lite) is more expensive than I thought($2000). You have to buy three pieces of hardware, and then the software for each electrical system in the Rover(engine, BeCm, HVAC,ABS,Transmission ECU, and electronic air suspension). Each software module is at least $200-250, but the system is said to better than the dealers system. Still, maybe too expensive. The VAG-COM seems like a bargain now.
