engine swap
Hi, I have a 2002 A8L with 190,000 miles on it. Do any other engines fit in it or would I have to find another 4.2 engine once the original wears out?

The D2 A8 4.2 engines last a long time and there are plenty of good used ones to be had from cars with blown transmissions, etc. If you are trying to save $100 on the cost of a used engine by putting in a 2.8L the work it'd take to get the stranger engine running and interfaced with the rest of the car would be many thousands of dollars and then you might have trouble passing smog. That said, at 190K it might be better to just get a different car than it would be to throw the labor at the engine swap. Depends on your ability, time, funds, etc. Or at least get a running A8L and make the best of both.

You might eventually need cam chain tensioners but the engines last and last. Hopefully with the trans rebuild they addressed the valve body wear that seems to cause a lot of the trans failures. If they just fixed what was broken the trans will fail again.
