Default feeling really, really dumb for asking this, but......

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/75069/battery.jpg"></center><p>
on every car I've ever owned, the big black cable has gone to the "-" on the battery and the big red one has gone to the "+". So i lift op the battery cover in the trunk and i find that it's black to "+" and red to "-". WTF ? Should i change it or should i leave it ? The car runs fine, but might this explain why my Navi is fried ?

Default Black cable goes on forward post, red goes on rear post

I don't know which is which....but that's what this picture shows.....left in the picture is forward.

Looks like it fits in one way only.

Default Actually, great question. In my experience, the connector with more than one cable is +.....

and the single cable is -. That is how it is in your photo. Having said that, I've always seen red=+ black=-. If the polarity is switched in your car, I imagine that far more than your Navi wouldn't work. Anything with a diode in the circuit wouldn't function or would fry.

Default Thats not red, thats brown, a typical ground color for euro cars. The "black" cable IS red, just ..

.. the black rubber sleeve is covering the red.

Cheers,

Default My girls father hooked a battery up backwards once. Blew all the fuseable links, once replaced, all.

.... was fine.

Default Thanks y'all :-)..

but what kind of twisted mind would cover a red cable in a black sleeve instead of a red sleeve ? That could have gotten fairly ugly quickly !

Default No problem at all. Also, In every euro car I have worked in, when you take the car apart....

..... every ground in the car is brown. But with so many positives, for so many different uses ( fused 12v with ign on, fused 12v all the time, windows, and so on) and different needs ( power windows, radio, seats, etc..) that they can not all be red. But a ground, is a ground. They ALL go back to the battery, and all are brown.

So they think from the opposite side. Ground. Makes sense to me.

Yeah, they could have left the main power cables uncovered, or covered in red.......

If you can think like a German, you have a special gift.

Cheers,
