Fuel gauge malfunctioning on 97 A8q.. Please HELP!
when my gas goes below half tank my fuel guage starts to malfunction... as i'm approaching a stop the needle literally drops to empty! As i accelerate sometimes it bumps right back up to where it was before and sometimes it does not. Has this happened to any other A8 owners out there? Do you think it's a fuel sending unit malfunction or a problem with the regulating pumps in the tanks?

Fuel sender indeed
I had the same problems, *sometimes* would the needle suddently drop from 1/4 to empty. I opended up the two fuel sender unit, cleaned the connections, and never had the problem again since. The connector appeared to be a bit smudged, so I think that was it.

How did you go about that project? you make it seem as simple as...
changing a fuse... are there any DIY's regarding this issue that anyone can think of? I've searched and i'm not having any luck... if this is out of my reach i'll have to bring it in... thanks for the help

Check the Bentley for fuel sender unit
there is some procedure to get them out of the fuel tank from the trunk access.
See these pics when I removed mine:

There is only one connection in each sender unit. Considering that the resistance value of the unit itself (a large flimsy spring with a flotting weight at the end) is in the low Ohm values, then a bad connection can easily make the read value vary significantly.
Good luck,
Martin
