Fuel pump problem

My '95 A8 4.2 quattro fuel pump sometimes won't supply fuel if the tank is less than a third full. It can be restarted by adding a gallon of fuel. The dealer has renewed the pump and the level sensors but it has happened twice since then. He doesn't understand it and has been unable to get the anawer from Audi. Does anyone out there know the answer?

I had the same problem. It turned out to be the sending unit.
