Fuel Pump replacement 1998 A8
Hello, I need help with the steps to remove the fuel pump and replace it..do you need to drop the tank? Can you just replace the pump itself.

Fuel pump and its "installation kit", item 1A in the sketch, resides in the tank and is accessible from openings hidden under the trunk carpeting.

It's about as easy as an "in tank" fuel pump replacement gets. Accessible through the 'right side' access hole in the trunk. You'll need to pull the pad and the three small screws that retain the access cover plate in place.
The main "trick" is to lift-twist-lift-contort-swear-and-contort-some-more the whole assembly as you pull it up out of the hole. You also HAVE to pull the fuel gauge sender up out of the fuel delivery assembly (Audi's fancy name for 'expensive pump with plastic shroud around it') BEFORE trying to remove the assembly. Otherwise, it will never come out.
We did ours in the parking lot of my shop the other day-- 45 minutes start-to-finish, but we had the replacement unit in hand to look at as we were fishing the (damp) failed unit out.
