Hmm... Interesting. 2 tranny oil changes would be quite a hit in parts and time/labor. I wouldn't do this without some strong evidence of water intrusion.

Default The tranny is sealed. The breather has a check valve on it.

There is only one way the water can go into the tranny, if the coolant radiator has a hole. The tranny fluid can mix with coolant.

Default is it plausible/or practical?

I wonder how they expect the typical shop to test for .5% water in the ATF. That would be less than two fluid ounces.

Water can get into a tranny (or rear end) through a breather if you get in deep (like a ford or flooded road) even briefly, the water cools the tranny and the change in pressure tends to suck water in through the breather. A lot of cars have no check valve, just a little hose or cap. I've seen this on 4WD trucks driven through streams, you pull the plug on a manual tranny and water is the first thing out.

Default 97' - early 00' has a check valve high up behind the engine.

After 00' no check valve.

Since I have an early (small brake) 00 perhaps I have a check valve. Yea! For industrial purposes little breather fittings are available, a male pipe nipple with a chunk of porus sintered bronze-ish metal like an old GM in-the-carb fuel filter.
