Hello all. This is my first post. G28 engine speed sensor...questions about sensor location etc..

Yeah, those guys at Bentley get confused sometimes.
I am running the newer sensor (02') in my 97' A8. I had to trim the plug to fit into the socket, but they are the same. My old one had a wire all melt by the exhaust.

Either way, I am replacing the G28 engine speed sensor tomorrow with part #077 905 381 E
I just don't understand the Bentley's mix up....unless it's correct and my 98 somehow has an 00-01 sensor in it, lol.

Very good. Thanks again. I'll post the results after I replace the sensor tomorrow.
At least now I know the plugs are interchangable between model years. Just hope it's not the ECU....:-)

Gentlemen, trying to find the location of the speed sensor G28 on my 1999 Audi A8. Found this thread with the reference to the picture, but no picture Would somebody be so kind to post one?! Thanks for all the posts in this forum. I rebuilt the wrecked car, using your experience as a guide... I've been driving it for years now... It is time for a G28 sensor replacement!

I changed it last weekend, was able to locate it easy. Took me about 30 minutes, doing everything slowly and thoroughly. There were symptoms, actually, and engine light came out few times with the code, indicating there was a problem with the speed sensor. It was intermediate, and would happen during the winter time, when there would be temperature below 20 F. The car would start normally, and then, after about 10 minutes of driving the engine RPM would skyrocket. Eventually after stopping, and re-starting car few times, it would go back to normal, but than return again, when you least expect it. Very annoying and very unsafe. During the warm days, it worked just fine. But the winter is coming.. So it was time to replace the G28 censor. Before this problem, my Audi would average 22.4 mpg. When the problem started, the average dropped just below 20 mpg. I drove the car for about 200 miles, since I changed the sensor. The mileage improved to 22.3 mpg so far. And I am not sure how G28 might influence the work of cruise control, but it started working again! Thank you all, guys! These site and forum are the real saver for people like myself. So far, I was lucky enough to find the answers to all my questions on this forum!

Just unscrew it from transmission and clean and replace
My 2000 A8 would not start.
Turned over but sounded fuel starved.
VAG says:
1 Fault Found:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-00 - -
Pulled the sensor out from transmission. (See #7 in pic)

Cleaned it off with shop towel and MAF cleaner.
Put it back in. Car starts right up - no code.
The tip is magnetic and picks up stuff. Mine was dirty for sure.
If the ECU can't read that the engine is turning over, i.e. engine speed sensor, it won't put fuel at injectors and car sounds like bad fuel pump or spark plugs.
Seem like some may have unnecessarily replaced fuel pump/filter, spark plugs, or mistaken this for an immobilizer/key/cluster issue when all they needed to do was clean off a rubber and metal tipped sensor and screw its one hex bolt back into its hole in the bell housing area.
As always get VAG or have someone pull codes.
Don't replace this part until you try cleaning it first.
It really shouldn't wear out but it does get dirty.

Still running rough so I bit the $100 bullet and ordered and installed new G28 . Replace burned out fog light bulbs while down there.
Car is idling way smoother and getting slightly better MPG.
I take back what I said about cleaning vs replacing especially since MPG's was effected it's worth just replace G28 if you have intermitent G28 codes at $4/gal gas should pay for itself.
