High Mileage anyone? my '02 is up to 195k miles now, still going...
Curious how other high mileage cars are doing? The dealer told me that the '02 and '03 models were more relaible, and didn't suffer from the transmission issues of earlier models. So far that has proved to be true. Not that the car hasn't been without it's problems, the tip-tronic control kept going into manual mode last year and then the rack and pinion blew out a few months ago, but all in all, seems much beter than I heard on the earlier models. I'm just wondering if I'm about to get a rude awakening or if this is normal for an '02?

'01 here, 188000 miles. No problems. Only failures ever: the steering-rack (160k) + airco-fan (175k)
All the electrics still work great and since i replaced all front and rear control-arms, the car drives and feels like new. God i love this car.
An amazing accomplishment from Audi !!!
Several Audi specialists here in Holland say the D2 facelift A8 has a very, very good reliability-record (over here in Europe at least).

I didn't know that was possible if it didn't have US emissions
I'll have to check into it, I'm in the market for another car, an A8 TDI would be the perfect car, especially if it was as relaible as yours. Is there a timing belt on the TDI engines? For now, I'm settling on a Volvo S80 AWD, nice car, but no A8.

Congratulations! My '02 A8L will just be turning 100K so it is
a relative puppy. I was wondering when I would need a rebuilt tranny, but maybe not for another 100K or so.
I wonder if driving habits make a difference on tranny life. I mean if you drive an S8 maybe that car is driven harder and the transmission will fail sooner.
At any rate, I was hoping to drive my '02 for at least 6 more years or so and that seems realistic.

Q: Is there a timing belt on the TDI engines ? (answer inside)
Yes, the D2 TDI's have a timingbelt running from the crankshaft to the two cylinderbanks and a second timingbelt running from the crankshaft to the injection-pump.
The D3 diesels are common-rail based and they have only one timing-belt (to the cyl.banks).

Mine is always on the interstate, i go easy on the gas, and never use the tip shifter
I drive 35k+ per year, most at 2000rpm/70mph, I'm sure the city cars are harder on the transmission. I was thinking about seling the car, as I don't want to deal with a transmission failure, and I thought the car was overdue. After seeing all of these posts on '02s, I guess we're lucky to get the first year of the good transmissions...

249,407 Miles on the Original Drivetrain. . .
I'm sure there are several of you guys that have me beat; I know of a guy around Fond du Lac, Wisconsin that has 368,000 + miles, as of last fall.
