Default High temperature on '02 S8 - what to do

While driving on the freeway last night air conditioning went warm and temp guage almost hit H. Made it to the airport and am wondering if I should drive it upon return from my business trip. Guessing it was the thermostat, but don't want to cause any expensive damage. Any words of wisdom ?

How many miles on the t-stat? The original ones were prone to failure before 50k.

Default Yes, if it goes hot, turn the AC off and heat to high

And use the aux radiator (heating coil). You'll be uncomfortable, but you can drive it to the mechanic.

It's the thermostat.

Default Heater core = aux radiator

You just need to manually turn the fan on HIGH and put the temp on HI. It's nothing but an aux radiator that happens to heat the interior of the car.

Default When my '00 A8 did the same thing it was actually

the water pump (according to stealer). I did the "aux. radiator" trick too. Of course it was on a 90° afternoon on business 70 miles from home. I was thinking that the AC probably went warm because of some kind of limp mode. I used the good old 480 AC (roll down 4 windows, do 80).

Default Still watch the temp gauge like a hawk, and if it screams beyond the safe zone, STOP!

Pull over and call a flatbed. You do not want to overheat your motor. PaulW's advice is the best for a short drive and obviously a cool evening is the preferred time compared to the heat of the day over lunch hour, which is probably the most convenient. Good luck!

Default Didn't audi extend their warranty on the t-stat to 80k? Got a paper about it right when I hit the

ticker for the 80k mark. I'm pretty sure they extended he warranty (sounds very un-audi like but I remember the dumb comment in the paper about a
"commitment to the environment")
