Default I know pauls not around for this theory but....

After reviewing some previous posts, is it a reasonable possibility to convert a regular 40 valve 4.2 engine into the S8 engine. I mean swap the cams, cam gears, and intake. Would our ECU's accept the difference in engine function or would this need to be changed also? Are the S8's injectors different?(bigger/higher flow capability)

My guess is that the ecu would have to be swapped or modified. For the difference in HP and torque that you'd get from all the work involved, I can't imagine it would be worth it. Might want to look at some of the basic things like recoding the tranny, using ultralight rims to reduce your rolling weight, modifying your air intake to allow for better cold air flow and maybe keeping the tank only half full to knock out another 90 lbs or so. I guess the big question is; "what would you hope to gain by this upgrade, faster 0-60 or quarter mile times, higher top end, better acceleration at higher speeds?"

I haven't done much besides recode the tranny on my 98 so far, but I can tell you it launches pretty damn quickly and once I'm running on the highway, there aren't that many cars with the torque curve to keep up with it. You can have the ecu recoded as well and that'll bump you up maybe 10 - 15 hp.

Just my .02 FWIW.

Default Definitely need a new tranny ECU also ...

If for no other reason than that the S8's tranny shifts at ~7300 rpm, just past it's 7000 rpm hp peak, while the A8's tranny shifts early at it's 6200 rpm hp peak.

Default If you want to go like a bat out of hell, use more RPM

from 3 - 6k rpm our cars are silly, I've owned one of these beasts for 2 weeks ( 3rd Audi in my life ) and I'm still amazed at what happens when that need climbs.

I see no need for another 50HP on top of what I have. I spend way more time trying to squeze 26MPG out of the engine. I enter ramps at 55 and leave at legal speeds, what happens in between never happened.

I'm trying to burn off a set of 50% tires and get some Michelin Pilot AS's before the snow flies up here in New England. I'm using the torgue curve wbanas speaks of to do it . I relearned the hard lesson about tire pressure again when I found a 30LB tire in the rear. At 39LBS a corner , the car was a different animal and I'm wearing out these tires with much less drama.

Default 2nd on the recoded tranny

As a newbie I noticed immediately how the car launched much better .... When my mom get into the car I want to push a button on go to sub 200 shift points before she drops it in drive . Is there any way to do this without a VAG setup. Imagine if it were accomplished when you picked your seat/wheel number .
