Im bringing OIL to the table again.
I have been reviewing post from many different forums concerning motor oil. Mainly Royal Purple, Amsoil(which I have been using), German Castrol, Redline and of course M1.
This dilema has only come about due to my decision to keep my car. If I were to make a decision based directly on the mass opinion, I would probably be using German Castrol.
I know this board generally recommends M1, but if you had to have an alternate what would you be using.

Start with Audi's recommendations
Start with Audi's chart.
Note only certain Mobil 1's cut it--0W40 as far as the normal US availability, not 0W30 nor 5W30, nor 10W 30, nor the various xW50's.
If you want to go up a notch, go to their 505 01 approved oils--these started w/ the RS6.
Mercedes has similar standards which have been increasing over time if you want to poke in that direction on line.
As the Audi TSB points out, many of these oils are not generally available in the US.<ul><li><a href="http://www.audiusa.com/common/images/Audi_Approved_Oil_Chart.pdf">Audi's approved oil chart</a></li></ul>

My experiances with oils
i've used Castrol, Amsoil, and Mobil 1. My car currently (in storage) has Mobil 1 in it, just because i could find it and it was decently cheap (5qt container of 5w40 synthetic for $20). I use Castrol dino oil in the wifes MkIII VR6 Jetta, and would in any car i would run dino. The german Castol is hard to come by and just because you found it somewhere once, doesn't mean it will be there again. Same thing with the Mobil 1 i use (5w40 truck and SUV, mobil 1's only 5w40 oil in the US). 0w40, which a lot of people like, can now be found almost everywhere. I used Amsoil 5w40 eurocar formula in the S4, and liked it very much. I plan on using it again when i get back. The problems with it is the price and that you have to order it ahead of time instead of just running down the road to walmart (but a few shops do stock Amsoil). The reasons i will choose the amsoil again are: the oil temps and pressures seems to stay more consistant (lower temps, higher pressures), very little oil loss (the car only uses maybe a 1/2 qt every 4-5,000 miles anyways), and that i know i can get the exact oil i want every time.
