Just bought a 2001 A8L - Nav disks don't read and sludge!!!
I'm selling my 97 and I bought a 2001 on Ebay. Whenever I put in a Nav disk, I get a message saying "Check CD-Rom" I don't know what the deal is. Funny thing is... whoever owned the car last burned a copy of the Ohio Valley disk and the burned copy works fine. However, not even the original Ohio Valley disk will work. Also my Nav Disks are Copywrited in 2003.
Also after I got the home I changed the oil and noticed there was a lot of sludge in the engine. It looks dirtier than my 97 with 150K. Any ideas about what might have caused the sludge buildup and how to get hid of it? I used Mobil 1.
Also on a side note...does anyone know what size socket is used to take off the oil filter cap? Also can I just change the filter without the rest of the oil coming out? Thanks.
Getting this new car have rekindled my interest in the A8!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! There are oil additives that may clean up your sludge...
I think the type my mechanic recommends is BGK44 or something like that. It works fine w/ Mobil 1. Does the motor pull strong? Maybe it just needs to be driven kinda hard and pulled to redline.
Can't answer your Nav disc questions, as mine work perfectly.

Re sludge?
Several Mobil 1 oil changes over several months would do well to clear accumulated sludge. M1 has wonderful solvent properties. perhaps too wonderful ;-) you might choose any premium mineral oil rather than the full synthetic for the first cleanse.
Sludge builds from infrequent oil changes as the detergent additives break down. Or should we say "consumed". Driving patterens that lead to sludge generation, such as short haul etc. can make factory approved 7000 mi oil changes to great in terms of time. The same milage in over the road driving patterns would be no problem.
I would not feel that the two liters lost in a filter only change would be to great an expense. The oil in the pan will not drain when the filter is pulled. That said, If I'm under there wrenching an oily dripping mess, I'm going to change the oil too!
Sorry, CD's and Nav systems are not in my experience. I suggest you roll your windows up and down a few times and turn the car off and restart. That sometimes works for some popular computer operating systems ;-)

Sludge could be coolant, or just oil that's never had an Eyetalian Tuneup. The filter cap...
...is like a ginormous 32mm or something. I got a Crapsman socket @ Sears for it...

Had the sludge buildup in my car when I bought, highly recommend Auto-RX.
It really does work and I'm the last one to recommend snake oils. Basically you run it and some quick oil changes 1,500 miles apart.
The oil change intervals are too long especially for a car that wasn't running sythetic at the factory.
