Just got off the phone with Nalley Audi in ATL....
To see if they had trans fluid for my fillup tomorrow. I got quoted $15.43 per quart for their ATF. I will be filling up with Mobil 1 Syn tomorrow...

I would shy away personally from using anything but the official Audi approved fluid in your tranny. These tranny's have a special fluid do to the programmed slipping in the gears to allow for a smooth gear change. When I was rebuilding my tranny I was told by many ZF people the Audi fluid was designed to have the proper viscoscity to allow for the friction during the slipping.

Just sounds like a load of crap to me!
I mean come on! Audi has a special refireny some where that refines their special oil or their special tranny fluid? There just has to be some spec on the fluid, and I can't imagine that M1 or Redline dosent have an equlivent.
With all the BS of how few refineries there are in the US or even in the world for that matter that some special Audi **** is any better or differently spec'ed than something from M1, or it would be way more than $14 a qt.
Something just dosent add up there.
Sounds like the old special audi fluid for the power steering fluid. (granted its different from every other power steering fluid for any other car out there, but just not a magical fluid)

Re: You can find it for much less than that.
I just found out that my neighbor works for Accurate Transmissions (supplier to all the local jobbers for TC's, valve bodies, manual transmissions, transfer cases, etc.). He's a veteran trans component supplier/rebuilder. He says the ZF automatics like ours are supplied with the Pentosin fluid due to design issues related to clutch material. He said you'd be in big trouble to play with any other fluids.

There are about 8 different sources for the same Pentosin fluid.
Audi, VW, BMW, Jaguar, a couple of others, plus generic Pentosin ATF.
I'm not sure you couldn't safely use regular ATF with some friction modifier additives, but that's another discussion.
