Just got a Touareg, here's what $46,000 gets you at the VW store.

I may have mentioned this already but.....
The auto stereo/gadget place I have been using for many years had this comment. They do see all of the high end cars and trucks.
The Cayenne was nice, but noted that virtually every part the removed to install the radar/stereo/autostart/phonekit said VW on it. They questioned why anyone would pay over 20K more for it. In a side by side driving test they said, yes the Porsche handled marginally better maybe worth a few grand more, but no where near the difference that was being charged. The build quality of the VW seemed slightly better than the Cayenne they were working on.
On the other hand what do they say "Porsche-ther is no substitute." Well maybe in this case there is.
The Porsche turbo is much faster but also cost over 90K.
Not that gas mileage matters in this price range but I would think that you would be stopping at every station to fill up. The Porsche dealer admitted the turbo got around 8-9 gph around town. The normally aspirated engine around 11 or so. Of course my new A8 only gets around 14 so maybe it doesnt matter.

I took an offramp last nite at 60mph, never above 55 in the A8.
The A8 leans too much in this turn to go above 55, the Touareg did it at 60 mph with no lean or diving at all.
The suspension is bolted down tight, no body roll or lean at all yet very compliant ride. The Touareg is extremely fast, certainly faster than my A8 and comparable with my 6 spd S4. In the luxury dept. the Touaerg crushes the A8.
Then again it could just be that new car smell. Just go drive one and you'll become a believer.

What wheels/tires and what motor were on the A8?
I can't find any `track tests' of the Touareg, however the Porsche Cayenne (sister car to the Touareg) Turbo is marginally better on the skid pad than the (US spec) A8L with 18" performance rubber. They were not supposed to make the Touareg performance competitive to the Cayenne, but maybe they did. Any test with the stock 16" wheels (or worse, the Conti-contacts) just isn't fair
I'm also wondering how the Touareg could "blow away" the A8 (US spec) in acceleration when it has a measured one second deficit in 0-60 time. Drop the 16" snow tires and tie on some reasonable performance shoes and the A8 is a surprising performer. (BTW, as far as shoes go I had the same problem with my 2000 S4 - bigger better shoes made a dramatic improvement in feel as well as performance.)
I am looking forward to seeing the inside of something that could "blow away" a recognized class leader in interior treatment. If any one could, though, I would not be surprised for it to come out of VAG!!
