Timing Belt, Water Pump, what else? It's not an Audi dealer. thanks so much for your help.

Ask yourself---

Transmission-- plan on rebuilding it within the first year. It is going to cost you $3-4K.

Is it worth it, price wise to buy this car?
Will he guarantee to fix anything that causes the check engine light to come on in the first month?

Default Ask one question: "can I have this car inspected by my independent mechanic?" And then...

...print the pdf of PaulW's excellent inspection checklist and either go over the car thoroughly yourself, or, if you're not qualified, pay a good indy mechanic to do it. And you'd be better off with a later model year if there's any way you can swing it. 97s have a higher incidence of glitches.

Audipages A8 buyer's checklist

If the car drives fine without tranny issues and the body is dent free, I would offer $6K "as is".

Default Get a warranty that will cover the transmission

I just did the same thing you're doing. Of course if the tranny has been replaced already, depending on how long ago, it should be good. Find out whether its had its timing belt service, and otherwise just do what these other guys said. Good luck!

Default yea, I think they're dreaming thinking they can sell it for that price, hopefully

when I go look at the car I can meet up with some AW'ers and we can team up on them and talk them down? Any of you you guys in CT? the car is in Hamden.

Agree, my '98 was $10k with 111k miles 1 year ago. And that was at an Audi dealer.
