Default MMI Problem

Twice this weekend when I got in my car the MMI did NOT open nor did any of the other functions operate no matter what I did. I tried the on/off switch and the release on the dashboard. Is there an over ride? Has anybody else had the problem?
Anyway, after I shut the car off and restarted, it worked.

Sounds like a computer glitch, and you needed to reboot the computer. And that the on/off switch doesn't perform a complete shutdown and reboot.

Default The MMI is basically a computer.

I've had some similar issues with the MMI on my '04 A8L. Twice this weekend the navigation map display locked up and the screen showed my car not moving, but in a permanent position.
Consider the MMI like you would any computer. It is smart, but occasionally forgetful. I've learned that I can fix things with a quick reboot, by hitting three keys (see your MMI manual for the sequence). An added benefit is that you'll get to see the VERY neat MMI intro screen, which is usually hidden in day-to-day use. Rebooting the MMI is just like hitting the ctrl-alt-delete combo on a PC. (Of course I don't do that at all since I use a Mac.) ;-)

Default Cool...so it takes a three finger salute

Did you do this while driving or stopped? How much info was retained after the bootup? You said you were using the NAV, did the destination get saved? Or were you just using the NAV as a display?

Sorry for the ?'s, I'm an ocean away from my car and manuals.

Default What OS are you running on your computer!?

<center><img src="http://www.ehs.sbac.edu/support/images/faq-password01.gif"></center><p>
And what processor does it have?

On my computer, ctrl-alt-delete just brings up the Windows Security screen. The three finger salute hasn't forced a reset since, What? Win 3.11? DOS 5.0?

You need to update your PC. ;-)

BTW, I find that PrintScrn won't capture that dialog box, I had to Google Image Search an example. I wonder how the folks at that site grabbed the image.

Heh - just razzing you.

The reboot seemed to preserve all existing settings, so I didn't have to go through the process of setting up everything again. I am not sure whether it lost my destination, because I think I was just using the map in the driving position for display purposes.
I'd not suggest trying to do multiple button presses on the console while driving. Pull over to the side of the road and do it. (or wait for the Parktronic to signal that upcoming bridge abutment !!)
I've found some interesting "quirks" that affect the MMI. Maybe I'll start a topic so we can share our "experiences".

Same thing TWICE this weekend also. There must be something about Audis and weekends. I shut the car down and the screen disappeared but on re-ignition it didnt pop up. Once when it did, nothing appeared. A few pushes on the MMI **** seem to re-boot it. My Acura RL`s navi freezes every once in awhile and I have to shuyt down the car and restart.

Default Multiple flavors of Windoze

I just remember when it use to. A lot of the
computers for the tools I install don't even have a keyboard, just a touchscreen. It's pretty hard to hit multiple keys with a stylus.

Default Quirk topic

I'm having to live through ya'lls experiences until I can get out of Spain. In the four days I had with my car, I did not have any issues w/ the MMI. As you did, I had the NAV up for display and found it interesting driving on roads that were too new and didn't show on the map.

Default "Quirks" with the MMI and the Nav Display

I am not so sure whether roads that are not labelled by the MMI's Nav System have anything at all to do with whether those roads are "new".

I live in an area of Northern New Jersey that has been fully built up for decades, and sometimes even major roads are not labelled, even major intersections.

I think that it has alot to do with screen "redraws" on the MMI display. If the computer needed to label every road, a "moving" display might be very time consuming for the screen. I've also noticed that the map display seems to give more information if I am in an area where I am receiving the full amount of satellites. I don't know if anyone has experienced this.

Actually there are times when there are so few labelled roads (at any magnification) that I thought that my Nav was not working well, or had a bad antenna connection. The roads always show up, and are correct in their layout, but they are not usually labelled. My dealer checked the system and said it was OK. I trust that they know what they are doing. ;-)

The best way to check it would be to have a comparison with another A8L in the same spot, at the same Nav magnification. I am in Bergen County, New Jersey. Any takers???
