Default My transmission whine is fixed

I replaced the factory filter with an aftermarket and, following Gabor's advice, cut about 1/4" off the inlet tube. I also refilled with Mobil 1 Synthetic atf instead of the Valvoline Maxlife. The whine's gone, car shifts like it's supposed to and life in Audi world is much better. Thanks again to the forum for your help!

What exactly does trimming the tube do to eliminate the problem?

Default Tozo can probably explain it better, but it guarantees oil pickup.

If the new filter and the pan aren't an exact match or if the pan's even slightly dented, the inlet portion of the tube rests on the pan, limiting oil flow.

Trimming the tube guarantees adequate flow.

Default did this fix hunting and highway dropout?

Or does shifting just happen a lot quicker?

Default Excellent!

Did you get the email I sent? The guy called me back later, and dropped his price to $1500.

Default That's a good price!

I'm tempted to make a contribution to your lift fund so I don't have to spend any more time under my car fooling with the damned transmission! The S8 has considerably less ground clearance than my lowered A8. The name of the wax I was telling you about is System One. I've got a sample I can mail you if you'd like it.

Default Neither

The transmission shifted perfectly. It's just that the S8 had about 72m miles on it and was due for some preventative maintainence. I had a slight whine after the 1st atf change, so I did it over and followed Gabor's advice. So far-so good.

Default To clarify

Transmission was perfect. After I changed the fluid 2 weeks ago it developed a slight whine. Then forum experts suggested it was probably the filter . I installed a new filter and this time I trimmed about 1/4" off the inlet tube. The original fluid wasn't burned, but it was VERY black and the nmagnets and pan had quite a bit of sludge on them. I feel better with new fluid and filter.
