I few months ago I bought a 97 A8 from an Audi dealer, it came with the 5/75 Audi assured prog. So far I have been very happy with the car. It is an awesome automobile! The car now has about 48k mi, and is starting to behave strangely. There seems to be a lot of driveline lash. Especially when coming to a complete stop, the car shudders, probably the tranny switching to 1st or 2nd. I took the car to the dealer, the dealer confirmed my observations the there is drive-line lash, but told me it's normal. Having owned numerous cars before (including a 5000 Turbo with the old 3sp tranny) I don't think it's normal.

Just looking for some advice from A8 owners out there, whether or not anybody is experiencing with their A8, and whether this is normal for an A8 with 48k mi. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

I never experienced that on my '99 or '00 A8's. I did experience something similar with a '97 A4. The dealer had told me the same thing as you - they claimed that the tranny was electronically controlled.

Oddly, my A4 started doing this after about 40K miles - it never did it before. I suspected that there was something wrong, but it never did fail up to about 60K miles - I sold the car at that point.

My 97 A8 was doing this prior to the transmission failing! The dealer said that this was normal. My A8 has more miles (89k) than yours. So I guess you should probably get some more miles before it needs replacing!
