Default Not beating dead horse...just quick ? on A8 engine oil

Dealer informed me they use non-synthetic Valvoline engine oil. Recently did 45K maintenance and they put that in my car ('99 A8).

Question is, when I drive the 7500 miles and wanna do another oil change, is it cool to go synthetic? I don't think my engine's ever received it in the past though. However I am confident that synthetic is superior, and since just a little more expensive, why not. Do the 5v V8 engines take non-synthetic at the factory as well? That would be 2000+ model years of course. Thanks.

Default Synthetic is fine.

Hello,

Synthetic oil is fine for use after petroleum based oil.
You may notice some oil leaks start to appear, but if so, it
was just a matter of time before the seals would leak with
petro oil anyway.

IMHO, synthetic oil is warrented if you drive the car hard.
If not, I don't think there is any real benefit, provided you
change the oil at regular intervals.

What is the point of a German V8 if you don't WOT it at least a coupla times per drive? =)

I definitely qualify. It's healthy for her to do so anyway. =p

So then I guess from the factory, unlike BMW/Benz, Audi doesn't use synthetic. I am sure they do for the new A4 and new A8 though.

Default New Audi's have synthetic

I've been using Mobil 1 for over ten years on three Audi's and other vehicles, I would change to synthetic and never look back.

Agreed. Although...*sigh* everything in this world depends. Like mentioned in a tech article on this site, if you drive sedately, and don't live in a harsh climate, synthetic is wasted money for you.

More importantly, when I had my Eclipse Turbo, when I use Mobil 1 syn. in it, the engine sounds like it's ticking when idling, very annoying and cheap-sounding. Therefore I started using Synthetic Valvoline and it was no more tickin'.

For German cars though I bet Mobil 1 just rules. It's factory oil for so many awesome cars, so...

Default Syntetic is superior, would never consider anything else in my vehicles

After all, the oil is your engines blood, don't go cheap. Syntetic is always better. Change frequently anyway, especially during and/or after the cold season (if you have one).

What you should consider though is to use the right grade for your climate. Using a wider grade than you need means having unnecessary additives in your oil. You really don't want that...

This is the conventional wisdom, but I wonder how real it is.
I run synthetic in my race car, a turbocharged Porsche, but not
in any of my other cars. I have put 140K miles on a Volvo 940,
120K miles on a Lincoln Mark 8 (32V Aluminum 4.6l v8), 110K
miles on a turbocharged buick grand national, plus a few other
misc. vehicles. None used synthetic oil. All were driven hard. All
had oil changed every 5K miles. None ever had any engine problems
at all.

So, why use synthetic? I understand that Synthetic is better, it
can withstand higher temperatures and shear pressures than
normal oil. But, for a normally driven street vehicle, who really
cares? If you were going to argue an extended change interval,
I would agree, Synthetic oil can lubricate for 15K miles with no
breakdown. But if you are going to change the oil often, then,
IMHO, Synthetic oil is just a waste of $$$.
