observation about transmission hunting with the colder ambient temps.
it's been fairly cold here in SLC (<25) the last few mornings. the hunting has been strangely absent for the first mile or so of my commute. it's right back where I expect it when I get off of the freeway 6 miles later.
I suspect the greater viscosity of the cold ATF accounts for the difference I'm noting. Do you suppose we should run thicker fluid in the ailing units?
Anyone else have similar observations?

The Audi TCU uses a special warm up routine to heat the fluid up faster.......
What happens is it doesn't let the TC lock up until the fluid reaches a certain temperature. The constantly slipping TC helps to heat the fluid. But without TC lockup, there is no hunting.

True what is said
And...
If the transmission fluid gets too hot, the TCC is commanded to lock up and stay locked during "most" driving conditions.
Heat management!
A search of this forum will reveal more than anyone cares to hear. ;-)

weird - and good reading the replys 'why'. Similar (but bizarro) observations for me here...
I'm getting just the opposite affect but under the same scenario.
Mine is not happy being in tip on <25* a.m.'s for first 2mi, and I have to allow a gingerly 1-2upshift in auto or it 'falls out' briefly.
Goes back to feeling like new 2mi later.
Also
Sunday I backed down steep incline and when got to bottom flat still in "R", I had nothing for a brief moment, just rev. Waited a sec, returned to normal.
Guessing I finally should capitulate to a fluid change.
