OK, what's the lowdown on the 1997 A8?
My dad is liking that car alot, and feels that a pre-owned is more sensible than going all out with a new one. What are likes/dislikes about this car, and what kinds of problems have you run into. Thanks.

'97 did not have the Tip. Big changes in '00. As for foibles,

I would get a 98 or 99
They can be had for as low as 20K, more likely up to 30K.
The tranny is different from the 98 on, and you will need to budget money for maintenace. I would budget $2K a year and you will need it, don't let anyone fool you. That's a timing belt job one year, tie rods and control arms the next, brakes including rotors, plus a CV joint boot here or there. And then you will need an ignition switch sooner or later.
But if you own it for three years, that's 6K, and you can get the car for 25K, still way cheaper than a new one.
