Replacing Waterpump and thermostat only in A8. How involved is it???
Hello all,
Did anyone replaced the waterpump only in the A8 4.2. The ex-owner replace timing belts and serpentine belt at an illogical service center which didn't recommended replacing the waterpump & thermosat @ 80k miles, now the car has 105k and I just heard the waterpump bearing growling at idle last night. Why do these service places exist? How long does it take for a waterpump to make noise before it actually leaks coolant and breaks?
Thanks,
Louis

I read this so many times, must I remove the timing belt? Can I just
loosen the tensioner and remove the waterpump without messing with the timing belt?

Not without the possibility of ruining your engine- a bad thing.
If you need a water pump, I would go ahead and replace the TB and associated pulleys and tensioner simply because to do the job right you must properly remove and reinstall the TB. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but that is the way I would strongly recommend doing it.
