Requesting opinions on 2 wheel options, pics included....on a mission today.
I have dibs today on these 17" wheels from a 2008 A4:
<img src="http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m32/JunkyardCars/wheels/2008A4Wheel17.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
and have these 18" S-line wheels in my garage:
<img src="http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m32/JunkyardCars/wheels/s-linewheel.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
Being absolutely clueless on performance wheels, how much difference would I notice between 17's and 18's on my A8? (I don't track the car and probably never will.)
Any opinions on looks between the 2?

It is all about the unsprung weight my friend.
I've gone to 18" and dont notice much performance difference but on my wifes A6 we went to 19" and had a big difference. All rubber joints, knuckles and shocks wear much faster in my experience as you add the weight. I've been told that each pound added to a wheel is equal to 4 pounds of cargo.

OK...I need a wheel primer. Based on the unscientific test of leaning over the Caddy
bed and hoisting one of each set, the 17"ers feel like they're about 5 lbs lighter than the 18"ers.
the question as I see it is, is the aluminum alloy lighter than the rubber and carbon fibre tire material that will ultimately make up the difference?
I've never taken the opportunity to learn about wheels wrt diameter, weight, performance, and function.
Are there any good primers out there?

It's all about the weight. I'm probably gonna go with these soon >
Same size as my current wheels, but much lighter. My RS6 reps weigh around 30lbs/piece.. These RS4 reps weigh 23.5lbs/piece. That should make quite a difference in the way the car handles.

Offest / width the same? I prefer both the look / diameter of the 18's, unsprung weight...
...aside.
On a huge heavy V8 car like a D2 you're not going to notice the difference THAT much. I shed ~ 4lbs. per wheel going with my BBS's and my MPG improved like 0.1. Feels 'slightly' more spritely to my tracktuned buttometer, via steering response and suspension transition and off the line snappiness - but if you're a casual road goer you're unlikely to notice much of that (not that that's a bad thing, just noting it). On a Scirocco? Sure.
The 18's match the wheel arches of a D2 quite nicely IMO. Tho you may then need to lower it to achieve the right look. Look @ obw's car here, and Gabor and another silver D2 who's name's escaping me - they all run those D3 18's. I very much think they suit that car WELL. I dont' think a split spoker looks all that good on these.
Good luck, enjoy, report back.
