S8 ''00 Transmission wont recode, revs only to 6700 please advise
Hi guys, i got the 2000 S8 40v 265KW, European.
Now, if i try to recode transmission to sport mode or to any other code - it wont let me do that. Code seems accepted but then it shows the same code again. Default code is 00001 which is strange. ( Im able to do it on my other a8 easily, but not on s8)
ALso on standing car it would rev to 7500. But on tip mode it will only do 6700 and then change gear. Also on 5th gear when revs are 3000, speed is only 130 KMH. When the other a8 i have 97 4.2q, on same rev its 170KMH. I noticed this high rev does affect mpg. Also i feel i wouldnot be able to reach 300kmh. Did 260 and then very slowly going more... being 6200 revs already.
Any advise on sport mode and why it would only rev to 6700 ? THanks in advance for answers.!!

S8's have a much lower final drive gearing (front and rear differentials) than A8's ...esp earlier model A8's like yours. It's normal for an S8 to run at much higher rpms at the same speed as an A8. Yes, it kills gas mileage in S8's, but is responsible for most of the extra acceleration...MUCH more so than the extra 50 horsepower. An A8 fitted with an S8 transaxle and rear differential is just about as fast as an S8, just because of the gearing..but also loses better mpg's.
What trans coding, specifically did you try? ...01031 or 01032? ...the last digit may differ from US to Euro models(?) ...I'm not sure.
I don't know if trans coding can effect max rpm's. As I understand it, that is decided by the engine control module only...not the trans control module. Do you know if the car has the original ECU?

Now. Of course the car has ignition on, not engine on.
Tires are standard 245/45/18 Avus 6 spoke original rims.
I tried to recode to maybe 10 codes including all i found on this forum. but no luck
When browsing forum, i found that some transmissions somehow are coded to 00001 code ( same as mine ), and it wont let to change coding.
Ok so if its 124kmh at 3000, and its set by factory - fine. Now, how to lift redline from 6700 to 7000 ? I tried cganging TCU from other car, '99. and it was same story. did not allow me to recode. Maybe i need other tcu from 02 or 03 ?

The revs at certain speeds in certain gears are a result of mechanical gearing (as in ALL cars) and can't be changed electrically or electronically.
As for redline limits: That could be a separate problem caused by coding of or a failure in the ECM. No idea how to check that. If you have a registered version of VagCom (I don't), I'd confer with RossTech about that.

You can do it with the free download of VCDS-Lite from Ross tech and a cheap eBay OBD2 cable. That's all I used to recode my A8 to 00032. The major difference is not so much the slightly more aggressive shift points, but the total control of 1st gear >>
In tip mode it'll hold 1st till redline or until you shift it...AND better yet, you can downshift to 1st (in tip) any time, so long as you're within the motor's rev limit, even at partial throttle...incredible control, handling and power at lower speeds.

THESE NOT ACCEPTED
01031 THE ONLY ONE ACCEPTED
And the difference it made its in TIP mode now it holds gear till red line 7500. And that made me smile Now i can feel i drive S8 hehe.
It does not allow me to change to 1st unless i drive till 3000 rpm.
In D mode, shift points are at 6700 still.
So thats all, any more codes ? I can try hehe
