S8 Motor vs. A8 motor
#12
Well, the Spyker "exotica" uses the D2 S8's engine; no supercharging or engine mods.
According to the EVO (or CAR?) magazine, the only difference is an ECU change that remaps the engine and "frees up" some 60+ HP (certainly combined with a different exhaust set up).

It's for the Spyker C8 Laviolette
Apparently the figure is closer to +40HP, for a total of 400HP.

Spyker got 450 hp from a now discontinued model ...
... at 7800 rpm IIRC. The variable length intake manifold was gone and replaced with very short velocity stacks. I assume the cams were also more aggressive to allow HP to peak at that higher rpm.

I think that was the for the real supercar, which had a highly modified Audi 4.0L V8

I believe the Laviolette, or Spyder version, has the S8's engine with just the ECU changed, which provides for a +40HP / 354lb ft (part of which I'm assuming is coming from the exhaust) @ 1250 kg. I wish I could locate the EVO magazine for the exact language.

well if its just computer...then someone needs to get on that! GIAC? APR? MTM?
not just some shabby 5-10hp increase...if spyker can get power out of the 4.2 why cant someone else?

Good question, although it's a different proposition for a limited-production
exotica that runs in the $250K+ price range. S8 was a limited production vehicle, however for companies like APR and GIAC there's much more money to be made from selling chips to the turbo-based 4cyl A4s and A6 2.7T than a naturally aspirated engine. 98% of the A8/S8 owners are not looking for incremental power gains per se--the demographic for the car doesn't support such tuning. Either you get it from the factory (like AMG) or you don't. Who's going to chip an S55, for instance?

Custom chip tuners are also an option when the generic aftermarket ignore you.
there's a great shop 30 mins from me with a 4-wheel dyno, Audi experience (400hp A4 avants) which primarily is a one-off custom chip creator.

Sure, I had the A8 pulled on the dyno 3x for a baseline last year. He said ...
... the best he could do with the stock motor was maybe 10hp, and I forget the quote but he said something like $500 and up.
